Learn about the history of the Hiawatha trail, the impacts of resource extraction and fire as well as gain exposure to the culture of the past and present residents of the area. Throughout the trip you will learn and develop leadership and other skills, in addition to improving your function within a group. This is an opportunity for future students to ask questions about student life at Washington State University.
The Hiawatha Trail has been called one of the most breathtaking rails to trails rides in the country. We will travel downhill through ten tunnels and seven high trestles following the old rail line. Join a group of other new students, in addition to faculty and staff from WSU, on an exciting journey through Idaho's wilderness. The trip cost includes: transportation, lodging, bicycles, leadership training and all meals. The trip will include driving to Kellogg, Idaho, where the group will stay in a hostel, and then traveling to the Montana/Idaho border to bike the Hiawatha trail. We will be traveling through the mountains and the Palouse on the way back to Pullman.
On day one, participants will take the scenic drive through the Palouse to Northern Idaho Mountains. We will stay and eat in a group hostel in Kellogg, Idaho. On day two, we will travel as a group to the Montana/Idaho border to start the Hiawatha trail. We will take a shuttle bus back to our vehicles at the end of the ride, stopping on the way to Pullman for dinner.
Participants will stay at the McKinley Inn hostel in Kellog, Idaho. All meals, lodging and transportation (from Pullman to and from the Hiawatha Trail) are included in your registration. Please let us know in advance at WSU.leadership@wsu.edu if you have dietary restrictions.
Bikes will be provided unless participants would like to bring their own. Each bike will be equipped with head and tail lights as well as a helmet. Participants should bring the following gear:
